2. Fluminimaggiore – Su Zurfuru Mine

Su Zurfuru is one of the most significant mining sites in Southwest Sardinia, set in a quiet green valley where the natural landscape still interacts with the industrial architecture of the past. The mine, discovered in 1888, developed thanks to the vision of engineer Carl Marx, who designed an advanced mining complex for its time. His goal was to transform Su Zurfuru, through the Giovanni Longu Washing Plant, into the central hub for collecting and processing ore from the surrounding mines, introducing innovative technologies such as the first hydroelectric generator installed in Sardinia, powered by the Pubusinu spring, and later – under the Pertusola company – the large compressor produced by the Ingersoll Rand Company.

Although the washing plant is not accessible today, visitors can explore the museum housed in the former workshops, the compressor room and the turbine hall, where original machinery, work tools, documents, personal belongings donated by former miners and a rich collection of historic lamps are preserved. These materials recount the daily life of the workers and the role of the different companies that operated the site.

Su Zurfuru lies along a hiking trail connecting the surrounding mines, crossing Mediterranean scrub forests, small streams, the miners’ hamlet and the 1920 stone bridge, before reaching the Pubusinu spring. An experience that blends history, nature and local identity.
