10. Iglesias – Asproni Mining Village, Seddas Moddizzis Mine

Built between the 19th and 20th century by Eng. Giorgio Asproni for the miners working in Seddas Moddizzis Mine and their families, the village was home to 250 people and equipped with houses for the miners, a Church, the mine offices, the post office, the infirmary, the elementary school and the grocery store.

The village was abandoned in the 1970s, until a few years ago, when a major recovery and redevelopment project strongly supported by the current owners was launched.The mission was the rebirth of the village, made by culture, art, heritage, identity; The village being a bridge between past and future, between the miners‘ generation and the younger generation who need to understand where their roots come from.

Superlatives:

Visitors can enter the recenly restored Giorgio Asproni’s villa, with its red bricks tower, it’s one of the most beautifull neogothic style buildings  from 19th century in Sardinia. The village is located on a inhabitated plateau which deserves to be explored by easy hikes, for its rich  endemic flora and more mining heritage remainings.
