7. Iglesias – Pozzo Sella, Monteponi Mine

Pozzo Sella is part of the huge mining complex of the Monteponi Mine. It was designed by Eng. Pellegrini and it needed two years to completed (1872-1874). It worked for 15 years as a draining shaft, housing two 500 hp team engine pumps weighing 300 tons each. They were huge considering the technology of that time, and that transporting them from Belgium to Sardinia was really challenging. After 1889, when draining operations ceased, the shaft building started housing the mechanical workshops of the mine. Original machineries are still on site and visitors can walk around them and see how the workers’ life was nearly 200 years ago.

The architectural design of the shaft building, the old machinery preserved inside it and the still functional original watch telling the miners that their shift was finished.
