6. Iglesias – Villamarina Gallery, Miniera di Monteponi

Located in the amazing Monteponi Mine complex, Galleria Villamarina witnesses the technological  know-how leading Sardinia mines in the ‘800. It owes its name to theSardinia Kingdom Viceroy, Marquis of Villamarina and  was excavated in 1852, 174 meters above sea level. The haulage tunnel was designed for connecting the main shafts of Monteponi Mine: Pozzo Sella, drainage shaft designed by Eng. Pellegrini, and the Pozzo Vittorio Emanuele, an ore and miners transport shaft.

Visiting Galleria Villamarina is a charming immersion in the underground dimension of the mine.

Superlatives:

You can live the underground walking experience and also walk through the Monteponi Mine complex, one of the most important lead and zinc mines in Italy and Europe, which had a huge impact on Sardinia’s economy.
