13. Nuxis – Sa Marchesa Mine

The history of Sa Marchesa Mine started in 1883, when the first mining claim was issued here for lead, zinc, silver and copper; the mine worked for nearly a hundred years and the activities ceased in 1984. In the late nineties a new project started here, the local authorities decided to restore a part of the old mining buildings to make a small museum and a conference hall. Now the museum is open to visitors, it displays mining, speleological, and anthropological artifacts. A few meters away from the main buildings visitors can go underground, entering the amazing natural cave Grotta Acquacadda, used by ancient Sardinians for millennia. Here, sometimes, thanks to a collaboration with Cagliari University, visitors can live the unique experience of seeing students and archaeologists while working on the underground excavation site. Sa Marchesa also welcomes kids from the schools for laboratorial activities on geology and mining history.
