The Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park, established in 1999, is a wetland of international value among the most important in Europe, a rare worldwide example of an ecosystem set in a highly populated area and yet an ideal habitat for many animal species. Before becoming a regional natural park, the site was recognized by the Ramsar Convention in 1977 as a wetland of international value.

The Park area extends over a vast swate of about 1600 hectares which falls within the territories of Cagliari, Quartu Sant'Elena, Quartucciu and Selargius. The Molentargius Regional Natural Park includes numerous freshwater bodies, such as the Bellarosa Minore and the Perdalonga, and others of salt water such as the Bellarosa Maggiore (or Molentargius) and the salt pans. The numerous environments available have allowed the development of different types of vegetation and a large number of habitats for animal species. In this ecosystem we find the nesting colony of the Rosy gull (Larus genei) and the Pink Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). Among the particularly protected species at community level, the Molentargius is home to the red heron (Ardea purpurea), the little egret (Egretta garzetta), the marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), the sultan (Porphyrio porphyrio), the knight of Italy (Himantopus himantopus), the Avocetta (Recurvirostra avosetta), the Beccapesci (Sterna sandvicensis), the Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and many others.

Visitors can carry out different types of activities inside the park thanks to the network of paths and services offered by the institution.
