Porto Flavia, Mine of Masua
Porto Flavia - Iglesias (SU)
Site Category: Mining
Porto Flavia is a mining engineering work unique in the world. It was conceived, designed and built in 1924 by the engineer Cesare Vecelli on behalf of the Societe de la Vieille Montagne, which owned the Masua, Montecani and Acquaresi mines. This innovative charging system of the mineral had a potential of about 400 t/hour and allowed the loading of ore directly on ships in a few hours instead of days with small Latin sailboats. So were reduced the cost and shipping time of lead and zinc ore mined along the coast of Iglesias Into the limestone. were dug 9 silos (4x8x18 m) for the mineral storage, connected to an upper tunnel for loading, and another lower for discharge. Were excavated 9 silos (4x8x18 m) for the mineral storage, connected to an upper tunnel for loading, and another lower for discharge. The latter was equipped with a fixed conveyor belt, on which the mineral was downloaded from the silos, and a conveyor belt extensible. During the loading of vessels this conveyor belt was stretched outward to about 20 m through an open window in the cliff from which the ore could be loaded directly in the holds of ships.
